Life Behind Bars
Last week I had an opportunity to meet one of the inmates who was
imprisoned for 7 years, and was a friend of mine in Primary School. He used to
steal anything from a pet to a cow, dog houses, wire fences etc. for a living
when he was 11 years and was imprisoned for an attempted rape and was taken to
juvenile. He was released and committed another crime but then he was old
enough to take on a sentence as an outlaw. His mother passed away when he was
about 12 years and his father couldn't care less about what his boy was doing.
True gender equality rests in South Africans' hands
Written by Pontsho Manzi
As South Africa
commemorates two decades of democracy, we can count amongst our greatest
achievements that women now have the opportunity to transcend the barriers of
their race, gender and class to become anything and anyone they choose.
This is enabled by
amongst others, government's policy of equal education for all for our young; a
policy of gender parity in the public sector; and equity targets in the
corporate sector.
But have the lives of
women truly improved in the past 20 years? We may have the opportunity to
access opportunities but do we have the ability to do so? Are we adequately
equipped to take advantage of these opportunities?

Gautrain commuters where horrified on Monday morning when a man pulled out a firearm and gunned down a woman before shooting himself in the head.
The shooting happened after 7am between a Mercedes Benz dealership and the Gautrain station.
According to onlookers, the man was waiting for the woman as she left the Pretoria station precinct.
"He started shouting at her and then he fired," said one of the witnesses, who did not want to be identified.

It is difficult to speak of mining alongside women's rights and environmental sustainability. Mining is an adversary to both causes as it is a major pollutant and an unforgiving environment for women. But when Nolitha Fakude became Sasol's executive vice president for sustainability and human resources in 2005, environmental and women's issues became a major concern for the petroleum company.
When Fakude first took up her post, she set out to clean up Sasol's water use. It was under her eye that Sasol launched Water Sense, an initiative that aims to implement the company's water sustainability policies across all its operations around the world.
